Where to Stay in San Francisco?

San Francisco is one of the most popular cities in the [US] for both business and leisure travellers, so it is little surprise that the city offers all manner of hotels and guest houses. While hotels can edge on the more expensive side, there are often discounts and cheap hotel rates to be found in San Francisco if you do your homework.

Fisherman’s Wharf is a tourist hotspot, with plenty of shops, restaurants and 4- and 5-star properties by the water. Check out the Sheraton or Hyatt hotels for a bit of affordable luxury.  The Wharf is also the starting point for trips out to Alcatraz from Pier 33. If you’re keen to shop, opt for a hotel in the Union Square area which allows you access to San Fran’s finest department stores. It’s also only a short walk from here to the vibrant Chinatown or the Italian district of North Beach.

As  San Francisco is such a tourist hub, many hotels offer discounts and deals so check out hotel websites for seasonal offers.

San Francisco Accommodation Options

If you are on a tight budget, the cheapest accommodation can be found in the hotels dotted around the back streets from Union Square.  However, if you’re looking to treat yourself, there are plenty of glitzy 5-star hotels to be found around Fisherman’s Wharf and Nob Hill.

There are usually some good last-minute hotel deals to be found if you are flexible, although rates on San Francisco accommodation tend to stay relatively consistent. As a popular convention destination, hotels can fill up quickly so make sure book in advance.  If you’re looking for a cheap hotel offer, winter is probably the best time to pick up a bargain as there are fewer tourists vying for hotel rooms.

San Francisco Hotel Recommendations?

For a cheap and cheerful stay, The Carlton Hotel in lower Nob Hill is only a few blocks from Union Square, close to the fancy bars and restaurants of Nob Hill, but without the swanky price tag.

For a boutique treat, the White Swan Inn on Bush Street is a quiet and quirky bolthole with vintage-inspired rooms.

For the ultimate in 5-star luxury, head to the Fairmont Hotel in Ghirardelli Square by Fisherman’s Wharf. Keep your eyes peeled at breakfast – this is allegedly the home of the A-list film stars when they’re in town.
