Where to Stay in Lisbon?

The Baixa is Lisbon's central downtown area, home to grand squares, impressive buildings and numerous boutiques. There is plenty of accommodation, from hostels and pensãos, which offer good value for money and cheap deals, to luxurious spa hotels and boutique accommodation. To be convenient for the city’s famous nightlife, consider staying in the Bairro Alto, where there is a choice of hotels to suit most budgets. This lively area also has numerous cafes and restaurants. There are several atmospheric places to stay among the narrow streets of Alfama, the oldest part of the city. Belém, to the west, has several historic buildings and places of interest including the Torre de Belém and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. There are some impressive places to stay along the western waterfront, including an opulent hotel that is situated in an 18th-centrury palace.

Lisbon Accommodation Options

Lisbon is as popular with backpackers on a budget as it is with a sophisticated city-break crowd who seek more opulent lodgings. The city has numerous hostels, some of which are housed in beautifully restored historic buildings. There are also many family-run guesthouses and pensãos which offer good value for money. If you are looking for cheap hotel deals and last-minute offers, it helps if you can be flexible with dates. At the other end of the scale, Lisbon excels at style and luxury, with a number of converted palaces and mansions offering high-end accommodation. A good number of the deluxe hotels have spa and fitness facilities, while some of the beach resorts to the west of the city also have golf courses.

Transport in Lisbon

Lisbon Airport is located approximately 7km north of the city centre. There are several car hire companies at the airport, but there is also a regular airport shuttle bus. The metro is the most efficient way of getting around town, but the trams and funiculars are an attractive alternative, especially if you are not in a hurry. Lisbon has good rail links with other European cities.
