Where to Stay in La Paz?
The world’s highest altitude capital can cause altitude sickness, but this is a small price to pay to experience this city, a mix of historic colonial buildings, fascinating markets, and burgeoning corporate headquarters. Cheap hotels are found in close proximity to all of La Paz’s main attractions. The Sopocachi neighborhood is the city's little slice of renaissance bohemia, with embassies, international restaurants, and the best nightlife in the city. Half an hour's walk away is El Prado, the city's main thoroughfare. La Paz’s centre is home to the Plaza Murillo, containing the Presidential Palace, and the colonial-style Calle Jaen street. Below the city centre, Zona Sur is one of the wealthiest areas of La Paz, with expensive restaurants. Calle Sagarnaga boasts the Witches’ Market, where odd culinary ingredients are sold daily.
La Paz Accommodation Options
La Paz contains over 50 hotels, most of which are very inexpensive. The city is also home to a handful of bed and breakfasts, as well as a sprinkling of hostels and ecolodges, the latter of which are tucked into the verdant foliage of places like Madidi National Park. Many travelers choose to stay in hotels in and around El Prado, to be close to the city’s center and all it has to offer. Reflected in the discount hotel rates, less than half of the hotels have a full range of amenities, like swimming pools and room service. This is presumably based on the assumption that most travelers will be too exhausted after a long day of exploring Bolivia’s enthralling sights to make proper use of a fitness center. Whatever the case, hotels are reasonably priced, often with stunning views of the city. Public transportation in La Paz is generally cheap. Half-sized buses called micros are the least expensive option, and follow set routes. Trufis are similarly priced standard cars that also follow specific routes. Booking a low cost flight and taking public transportation to a cheap hotel will doubtless save travelers a considerable sum.
