Where to Stay in Geneva?

For its proximity to historic attractions such as the St. Pierre Cathedral choose a hotel in Geneva's Old Town. The area is filled with lively cafés and boutiques. It is also a good area to choose of you want to be near the city's main shopping streets. There is a choice of hotels - especially mid-range to upmarket establishments - in the Old Town. Also on the south bank is the Jardin Anglais (English Garden) and the famous Flower Clock which is made from more than 6,000 flowers. On the north bank of Rhône are some of the city's fanciest waterfront hotels.

For more affordable options, consider a hotel in Les Pâquis. This cosmopolitan neighbourhood is brimming with international eateries and there is a concentration of budget hotels in the area.

Geneva Accommodation Options

In 2009, Mercer's Cost of Living Survey named Geneva one of the world’s most expensive cities, and being an important financial hub, many of its hotels are four- and five-star options with excellent business facilities.

Despite these factors, with careful planning it is still possible to enjoy a trip to Geneva without breaking the bank. Due to the demand for rooms in Geneva, it is sensible to book ahead, although there are sometimes last-minute deals to be found, especially if you are flexible.
Aside from hotels catering for business travellers, there are more unique options, including stylish boutique hotels and elegant lakeside hotels offering classic design and first-class service.

For travellers on a budget, finding cheap accommodation in Geneva can prove difficult, but it is not impossible. Geneva has several budget options including hostels and cheap hotels. Geneva’s bed and breakfasts can also prove a more affordable option. For those wishing to sleep under the stars, there are also lakeside campsites nearby.

Geneva Hotel Recommendations?

For luxurious rooms and extensive leisure and business facilities, consider the Mandarin Oriental Hôtel du Rhône or the lakeside La Réserve Geneve which is set in landscaped gardens and has a choice of three restaurants and a spa.

For views of the Jet d'Eau, try the Hôtel d'Angleterre, an opulent boutique hotel.

The Hôtel Bel'Espérance is an altogether more affordable option with lake views from the terrace and use of a shared kitchen.

Transport in Geneva

Geneva International Airport is approximately three miles from the city centre. A direct train service takes around 6 minutes to the downtown railway station. There are also regular buses linking the city and it is possible to hire a car at the airport. From Geneva, the Swiss National Railroad system operates trains to destinations including Lausanne, Bern, Basel and Zurich. A TGV links Paris and Geneva.
