Faro is the gateway to The Algarve in Portugal. Despite most tourist interest falling beyond the city, there are some cheap places to stay in Faro for a night or two, with a handful of impressive Roman ruins and Moorish fusion design to be taken in. It’s 4.5 miles from Faro Airport to the city centre and a shuttle bus regularly interconnects between the two points. A popular place to stay is Faro’s Old Town, which is surrounded by Roman walls. There are also several hotels located within the town centre; a short walk from main places of interest including Capella dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) and a number of museums.

There’s cheap places to stay to be found close to the local beach, Praia de Faro. From there, take a boat out the uninhabited island of Ilha da Armona. As highlight for kids is a visit to Faro’s Big One water park. Beyond Faro, other popular resort towns to stay in The Algarve include Albufeira, Vilamoura, Portimao and Praia da Rocha; all offering hotel stays from luxury to discount hotels to suit a smaller budget.

Most have all of the modern facilities required for a chilled out holiday for two, or a getaway for the whole family.
