Where to Stay in Edinburgh?
As one of Europe's most popular cities, Edinburgh offers a range of accommodation. In addition to the major chains and 4- and 5-star hotels, the city centre is home to a number of famous properties that are almost institutions.
Princes Street is what you'd class as the centre of New Town, and that's where you'll find a number of the well-known Edinburgh hotels. Shops line Princes Street, and this area is in walking distance of Edinburgh Waverley train station.
The Old Town, divided from the New Town by the North/South Bridge, is characterised by the Royal Mile, which runs up to Edinburgh Castle. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site (along with the New Town) in 1995, a few of the old big-name Edinburgh hotels live here, as well as some cheap hotels and accommodation, towards Cowgate.
Depending on when you travel to Edinburgh, your choice of hotel may be limited. When the city hosts the Edinburgh Festival in August and around New Year, hotel rooms are notoriously difficult to find.
Edinburgh Accommodation Options
Edinburgh contrasts the old and the new in the shape of the two 'towns' and this is also true of the hotels that are on offer in the Scottish capital. As with most European capitals, Edinburgh hotels include familiar names such as Hilton, Sheraton and Radisson. It is also home to a number of modern boutique hotels, rivalling those of other leading international capitals. Be warned: these can often come with with a 'modern' price tag, too, and business or leisure travellers on a budget may find a stay at one of the many guesthouses, B&Bs or cheap hotel choices such as Ibis and Travelodge, more to their wallet's liking.
