Where to Stay in Dubai?
As a holiday destination, Dubai is characterised by its extravagant and luxurious hotels. While it is not really a budget destination, there are some cheap hotels, and many - even the high-end establishments - do offer deals and significant reductions on their rack rates. A large number of the really opulent beach resorts are situated along the coast in an area called Jumeirah. Dubai's iconic Burj Al Arab, which claims to be one of the world's few seven-star hotels and is designed to look like a billowing sail, is located on the Jumeirah Beach strip. For traditional markets, including the gold and spice souks, Deira is the best base. The historic quarter, Bur Dubai, on the opposite side of the Dubai Creek is also home to souks and markets. Little India, with its restaurants and textiles shops can also be found here. Luxury hotels, galleries, shopping malls and skyscrapers (including the world's tallest building) inhabit the Sheikh Zayed Road area.
Dubai Accommodation Options
Accommodation in Dubai is focused around its hotels, and although this desert city has some of the most luxurious to be found anywhere in the world, there are also some more basic options and it is often possible to get discounted hotel rates. The majority of Dubai's hotels are rated between one and five stars, although one does claim seven. At the top-end of the five-star market are extravagant beach resorts offering rooms, suites and decadent beachside villas. They tend to have excellent in-room, leisure and dining facilities. Away from the beach, the five-star options are no less lavish, many styled in Arabian splendour and offering a range of dining options. Dubai also has some world-class business hotels, some of which are situated in landmark skyscrapers, many offering state-of-the-art business centres. For the budget-conscience, there are mid-range chain hotels and more basic hotels with fewer facilities.
Dubai Hotel Recommendations?
For Arabian architecture and style on the Jumeirah Beach, you could try the One&Only Royal Mirage. The collection of exotic buildings is set amid a landscape of fountains and tranquil gardens. A good beachside choice is Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort & Spa which has 500 rooms and a choice of 14 international restaurants and bars. The spa has five hammam pools, saunas and steam rooms. Styled like a Bedouin settlement, the Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa is an exclusive resort located 65kms from Dubai itself. Opulent suites are situated among dunes overlooking sweeping plains and the Hajjar Mountains.
Transport in Dubai
Dubai International Airport is approximately 5kms from the city centre. Metered taxis are available outside the airport terminals. There is also a city bus service which stops at terminals one, two and three. There are several car rental companies in the arrivals hall.
