Where to Stay in Detroit?
Travellers are spoilt for a choice of hotel deals in Detroit – the home of the automotive industry and the birthplace of Motown. Detroit sits on the banks of the Detroit River and offers a range of riverside hotels, from the towering glass Marriott and other easily-recognisable hotel chains to the more secluded individual hotels at River Place.
Downtown Detroit is the most popular place to stay. Three of Detroit’s four sports arenas are in this area as well as many of the restaurants and much of the nightlife. You will also be close to Greektown, the riverfront, Campus Martius and the Entertainment District with its many casinos and bars.
Staying slightly outside central Detroit in areas such as Dearborn, where you’ll find the Henry Ford Museum, or Madison Heights, home to the Somerset Collection and Detroit Zoo, can often bring down the hotel price tag.
If you would prefer not to stay downtown, hotels closer to the airport may be a better option.
Detroit Accommodation Options
In Downtown Detroit, you''ll find the cheapest hotels alongside some of the mid-range accommodation. There are budget hotels aplenty in the Casino District, some with a free shuttle service, and also in the outlying suburbs.
Most of the well-known hotel chains cluster along the riverbank, while you’ll find the more unique boutique hotels in pockets like River Place. There are also opportunities to stay in mansions and carriage houses if you know where to look. Unmissable is the Renaissance Center, which boasts the tallest hotel in the Western Hemisphere.
If you’re travelling on business or don’t want to worry about being delayed by traffic, there are plenty of mid-range and luxury hotels close to the airport, many with free airport shuttle services.

Transport in Detroit
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is located 15 miles Southwest of the city. To get into town you can either jump a cab (around $45) or take the SMART bus. Detroit’s public transport system is not all that, so it is advisable to hire a car if you are staying in the outlying suburbs and want to explore. Downtown is easily navigable by foot.
