Where to Stay in Cancun?
In central Cancun, there are many high-rise resorts in the ‘Hotel Zone’, an island connected by bridges to the rest of Cancun. Many of these hotels are leading chain resorts with hundreds of rooms. There are budget accommodation options, including hostels, campsites and smaller independently owned hotels and motels.
Because of the natural beauty of the area and the concentration of Mayan Ruins, there are a lot of larger resorts spread out along the coast of the Riviera Maya. Many of these are eco-resorts that incorporate the surrounding flora into the decor and landscaping. These resorts are particularly popular with couples on honeymoon and families, as they tend to offer privacy along with lots of activities. Many resorts just outside Cancun only offer all-inclusive accommodation, which generally includes local alcohol.
Cancun Accommodation Options
Most people will opt for a beachfront hotel when visiting Cancun. The Hotel Zone is a packed, built up area full of action and energy. Some people might prefer to stay further outside of Cancun, where there is easier access to Chichen Itza and other Mayan ruins, or the Cenotes Caverns, where you can swim, dive or tube underground.
A lot of the sprawling resorts on the outskirts of Cancun are all-inclusive. Many are related to other properties in the area and offer transportation between them as well as the opportunity to use the facilities at all the properties. There is a Ritz-Carlton along with properties by Hilton, Riu, Club Med, Sandals, the local Palace hotel group, Westin, Dreams and many more.
Cancun Hotel Recommendations?
The Ritz-Carlton is on the waterfront and offers spacious rooms with views of the water and a large pool area. The hotel radiates elegance.
For a more relaxed feel, Xpu Ha Palace is an eco resort near Playa del Carmen, a quiet little beach town with relaxed bars and restaurants. Xpu Ha has thatched roofs and the accommodation is spread across the property, in little pods of three or four guestrooms each.
There are budget hotels throughout Cancun, but if you’re really looking for a bargain, consider staying in Playa del Carmen, there are a few small independent hotels that are terrific value.
Transport in Cancun
Cancun International Airport is 30km from the Hotel Zone area of Cancun city centre. Many of the larger hotels and resorts will offer transfers, and this makes it much easier to get to your accommodation. There are taxis and public transportation, but they can be a bit too relaxed for some international visitors. It’s also an option to rent a car if you’re staying outside the city centre. If you’re down toward Playa del Carmen, it might be worthwhile hiring a car for a day or two just to get to other areas. Many hotels and resorts, along with independent tourist activity centres, will organise excursions to the jungle, the ruins, or fishing, boating, diving, snorkelling or cave tubing.
