Where to Stay in Accra?

Accra is a natural destination for travellers interested in Ghanaian and African culture, but finding a cheap hotel in Accra can be confusing, due to the many choices available. Accra's sprawling size means that it has several distinct districts that appeal to travelers of all ages, interests and budgets. However, it is surprisingly easy to navigate. Most travellers to the city arrive at Nkrumah Circle, which offers easy taxi and bus access to the rest of Accra. Near Nkrumah Circle is the central market area where many city residents do their daily shopping; visitors who stay in this area can walk to the National Cultural Centre on the city's seafront to see its outstanding exhibits of Ghananian artifacts and African art. Adabraka is one of the best neighborhoods for those holidaying on the cheap, as it has Accra's highest concentration of discount hotels, inexpensive ethnic restaurants, and is also close to the vast orange-colored Vienna City entertainment complex. Osu, an eastern suburb of Accra, is home of one of the city's most important historic sites, Osu Castle, a massive Danish fortification built in the seventeenth century. Osu is also one of the most desirable residential sections of Accra, and travellers will enjoy the area's many mid-priced hotels, lush parks and gardens, and trandy shopping and dining. James Town, one of Accra's oldest neighbourhoods, is full of small markets and colonial-era architecture, and is also close to the city's scenic fishing harbour.

Accra Accommodation Options

"Most of Accra's neighborhoods offer plenty of accommodation choices and cheap hotel deals for travellers. The highest concentration of hotels, though, can be found close to the beach or near Kotoka International Airport. If you stay near the city's seaside, you can choose from many small and inexpensive guesthouses, most of which are built in traditional African styles. Many guesthouses have apartments available for larger groups or for long-term stays. Hotels near the airport tend to be more bland and Westernised, but many offer good value and clean rooms, as well as easy transportation to and around Accra's many interesting neighborhoods. Accra is home to over 60 hotels and just under 50 inns and bed and breakfasts. The city also contains a handful of very affordable hostels. Approximately half of Accra’s hotels offer restaurants and room service. A slightly smaller percentage of the city’s hotels provide guests with swimming pools and free parking. Hotel prices around the area do range widely, but opportunities for booking discount hotels are abundant. Travelers can also rent rooms in inns and bed and breakfasts around the city for a variety of prices, some of which are almost as cheap as the hostels in the area.
