Arguably Vermont’s most celebrated hotel, the Equinox Resort and Spa has hosted four presidents since opening more than two centuries ago. Built as a playground for wealthy British Loyalists before the Revolutionary War, today the AAA 4-Diamond hotel offers a balance of Old World charm and contemporary luxuries.
Accommodations feature fifteen-foot ceilings, custom-made dark wood furnishings and marble bathrooms. All rooms and suites have flat screen televisions and free Wi-Fi. Other lodging options include suites in the 19th century Charles Orvis Inn and rooms in 1811 House, a country home once owned by Abraham Lincoln’s granddaughter. For thrill seekers, the Lincoln connection continues. A favorite hideaway for Mary Todd Lincoln after her husband’s assassination, it is rumored the former First Lady resides on the property even after death – past guests and staff report seeing her apparition in the resort’s south wing.
Time-honored outdoor pursuits such as falconry, canoeing and archery are available on the 13,000-acre property as are present-day pastimes like golf, tennis and a Land Rover Discovery Driving School. Skiers are only 10 minutes by car from Bromley Mountain when staying here and Manchester’s historic Main Street is less than five minutes on foot – a complimentary shuttle is also available to transport guests within a two-mile radius of the hotel. The property’s spa features an indoor pool and fitness center with classes in addition to a full treatment menu.
Predating the Revolutionary War, the resort’s Marsh Tavern was once the Green Mountain Boys' meeting place and maintains its colonial ambiance with antique photos and a fireplace. Other dining options on-site include an upscale steakhouse, an elegant breakfast buffet and lunch at the golf clubhouse overlooking the ninth hole. For alfresco cocktails, guests can gather around the fire pit with live music and a menu of over 50 wines.
