Step back in time and stay in a 19th-century castle set in 100-acres of parkland and gardens in County Cavan in Ireland. The Cabra Castle Hotel was built in 1760 and anyone staying here will be following in some illustrious footsteps -- previous guests include Oliver Cromwell and James II.

The 4-star hotel is set in 100 acres of parkland and is now part of the Dún na Rí Forest Park. Stroll around the wall garden or visit the original wishing well or Lady’s Lake. Other attractions include the Ice House, Toba na Splinne Holy Well, Cromwell’s Bridge and the ruins of Fleming's Castle. The park has a range of wild animals including red and grey squirrels, stoats and rabbits. Mink and the occassional otter have also been spotted along the river.

The castle has high ceilings, ornate chandeliers, antique oil paintings and rich fabrics and tapestries. There are 108 bedrooms, all of which are uniquely-designed. The Castle rooms are designed in a mediaeval-style complete with four-poster beds and the Courtyard rooms are in the 17th-century converted courtyard buildings and overlook the walled gardens. There are also  six cottages, some with self-catering facilities and views of the countryside.

You can eat like a medieval lord in the hotel's Court Room Restaurant, or for a more laid back atmosphere dine in the Derby Bar. Treat yourself to tea and scones in the Drawing Room or relax with a drink on the terrace overlooking the gardens.

There is plenty to do at the castle; there's a 9-hole golf course, tennis courts and plenty of forest walks. Horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, archery and fishing are available nearby. The World Heritage Site of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth are within a 45-minute drive. These ancient temple and passage tombs are over 5,000 years old, older than Stonehenge in England and the Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.
