A charming pink-walled inn with an intimate atmosphere, the Applewood Inn "feels like your own private Italian villa", says Lonely Planet. The hotel is a quiet, adults-only property, set in pretty flower gardens, surrounded by a wooded glade in the Russian River Valley.
In the summer, guests can laze on the pool deck or snuggle up by the lounge's river-rock fireplace, during the colder months. There's also a small spa for on-site massages and many Sonoma wineries are within an hour’s drive. Make sure you ask for your free Wine Tasting Passport at reception, which entitles you to free tastings and discounts in the area.
The large breakfast menu is varied and locally sourced (eggs come from a ranch down the road and the fruit and vegetables are grown in the inn's own garden).
The restaurant itself is "a destination dining spot" and "Sonoma sparkler", according to The Michelin Guide. Its French-influenced Californian dishes, include cocoa nib-crusted rack of lamb and spiced pumpkin crème brulée.
Rooms in the original Villa Casa Grande 1920s building have heavy beamed ceilings, antique furnishings and attractive views. There are also three suites in the modern Gate House (la Piccolo Casa), named Castellina, Chianti and Cortona. Each has a private terrace, and a bathtub or whirlpool in the bathroom.
Do take note: the property is small and office staff leave at 6pm, so be sure to phone ahead if you plan to arrive late.
