The Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam is a landmark building next to the Waalseilandgracht canal in the city centre. It was designed by the greats of the Amsterdam School (the Dutch equivalent of Art Nouveau movement) in the early 20th century. A 10-year restoration project, which was completed in 2007, turned the property from a grand shipping house into a 5-star hotel.
Located in Amsterdam's Old Centre, the hotel is just south of Centraal Station and 15 minutes' walk from Dam Square, where the Royal Palace is situated. Major attractions, such as The Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, are are within 30 minutes' walk.
Breakfast is served until 11am during the week and midday at the weekend. Guests can choose between a full American buffet, a light French breakfast, and a healthy range of yogurt, fruit, muesli and juice. There's also an "excellent and affordable" Mediterranean restaurant that Condé Nast Traveller recommends for dinner, plus a classy bar serving afternoon tea.
The wellness centre (free access to guests, open 7am-11pm) has a pool, a sauna, a steam room, a whirlpool and a fitness room. Spa treatments are also available.
The rooms have high ceilings and panelled walls, and are a good size. All have modern furnishings, including leather chairs, and come with free Wi-Fi and contents of the mini bar, which include beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks (restocked daily). Superior Deluxe Rooms are larger than the standard Deluxe Rooms, and some have 4-poster beds.
