The lakeside Basin Harbor Club has been touted by Frommer's as "one of Vermont's most peaceful resorts if your goal is to kick back and enjoy lake breezes and lovely scenery". The 700-acre resort on the shores of Lake Champlain features an 18-hole lakeside championship golf course, a spa, an outdoor pool and tennis courts among its many attractions.
This Historic Hotel of America opened more than 125 years ago, and the same family has been running it for generations. Rooms in the main lodge are done up in classic New England style with country furnishings and free Wi-Fi, although no TVs. Cottages (each unique in design) are tucked into the woods throughout the property, with lake views from their private patios, and Jacuzzis and fireplaces.
It's a great pick for family holidays, with activities to please any age group. The resort has several vessels for skimming through the waters of Lake Champlain, the US's sixth largest lake. Guests can also explore on kayak and speedboat, or hike or bike across the terrain. There are jewellery-making workshops, painting classes and movie nights, plus a robust schedule at the kids club.
Two restaurants source the freshest food from Vermont's bountiful farms -- more than 200 purveyors can be found in this county alone. The Main Dining Room is more formal, requiring dinner jackets and collared shirts in the evenings, while the Red Mill serves up burgers, chops and sandwiches for a more casual lunch or supper. In the summer, head out to the North Dock for weekly lobster dinners and s'mores round the campfire.
