On the coast among the wineries and beaches of central California lies the Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay. This child-friendly property is also home to the area’s largest day spa and Monterey's original craft brewery.
The hotel is set on a historic plaza and is within walking distance of the vibrant Fisherman’s Wharf and Monterey Bay Aquarium (ask at the hotel about tickets -- they are the same price as when you buy direct, but are valid for two days instead of one). It's also a good location for business travelers (Monterey Conference Center is just next door), and Santa Cruz and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park are both about an hour's drive for day trips.
Children are welcomed with warm cookies at check-in and automatic membership into the Portola Pirates kids club for ages 3-12. The first stay at the hotel as a Portola Pirate includes a souvenir Portola Pirate Bag and self-guided treasure hunt map for buried treasure.
The hotel does not have air conditioning, but all nautical-style bedrooms have ceiling fans and large windows or patio doors that open to the sound of the ocean (and the occasional seagull or seal). Most rooms overlook the city or the pool courtyard. Upgrade to a Harbor View Room on the fifth or sixth floor for impressive sea views at night. Wi-Fi is free in the lobby or bar, but available for an extra charge in the guest rooms.
On site, Jacks Restaurant & Lounge is a well-known local's restaurant serving cuisine inspired by the California coast. Craft brewery Peter B’s Brewpub is the “downtown hot spot for beers,” says The Huffington Post.
Self parking is $19, Valet is $22. Charges will be added to your bill on checkout.
