More Room Types

Recommended by The Guardian as one of the best hotels in Galway and praised by Frommer's for its "grandeur" and "lovely views", Glenlo Abbey Hotel dates back to the 18th century and is one of Ireland's top luxury hotels. Set within a sweeping estate overlooking Lough Corrib, the 5-star property is only two miles from lively Galway city.

The wild Connemara region, described by Oscar Wilde as a "savage beauty", is on your doorstep with its rugged Twelve Bens mountain range. Kylemore Abbey is a scenic hour’s drive away towards the Connemara coast and is known as Ireland’s most romantic castle.

The lobby establishes the tone, with leather-bound tomes, gleaming chesterfields and parquet floors. Rooms have views of the lough, golf course or parkland, and come with free Wi-Fi, comfy slippers and bathrobes, DVD players, mini bars, king-size beds, and antique-style furniture. Upgrade to a River Room with scenic views overlooking the wild West Ireland landscape.

The Pullman Restaurant, comprising of two carriages from the original Orient Express (open seasonally), is one of the most unique dining experiences in Galway. One carriage once featured in the film adaptation of Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express" and both served the Paris-Istanbul-St Petersburg route. Expect exquisite marquetry, brass work and richly coloured wood dating back to 1927. Alternatively, with high ceilings, chandeliers and tall windows overlooking the grounds on all sides, the River Room restaurant is an elegant setting for dinner, with dishes such as beef carpaccio and monkfish medallions poached in red wine on the menu. For something less formal, try the cosy Oak Cellar Bar.

There is a lakeside 9-hole golf course on site with a resident PGA Professional offering tips and tuition, or practice your swing on the newly renovated 21-bay driving range. Archery, fishing, horse riding, tennis and falconry can also all be arranged.
