With its high ceilings and sweeping staircase, Mount Somerset Hotel & Spa mixes Regency splendour with modern comforts. Its hilltop position, overlooking pretty farmland and rolling hills in the Vale of Taunton, ensures splendid views, and four acres of bewitching gardens and award-winning food add to the appeal.
Despite the manor’s generous size, there are only 19 guest rooms, creating an intimate feel. All have been upgraded with tasteful floral prints, plush velvet and free Wi-Fi, while original antique furniture preserves a sense of the mansion’s history. Roll-top baths grace some bathrooms, or upgrade to a Garden Deluxe room for your own private hot tub.
Awarded two Rosettes by The AA Restaurant Guide 2014 for "accomplished modern cooking", the restaurant is a sophisticated space with starched tablecloths and views over the terrace and croquet lawn. The menu stars regional ingredients such as Exmoor lamb, home-smoked salmon, Brixham lobster and Somerset cheese. After dinner, guests can unwind in the cosy lounge, where a fire burns in the winter.
There’s also a gym and a modest Moroccan-style spa, decorated with mosaics and original ornaments from a traditional hammam. It's small, but surprisingly well-equipped, with a steam room, sauna, hydrotherapy bath and foot spa. For the brave, a 'kubel dusche' -- an elevated ice bucket -- provides a refreshing ice shower.
Glastonbury, Wells Cathedral and a brace of historic homes provide good excursion destinations. Exmoor National Park is a 30-minute drive away and the Somerset Levels are even closer.
