Prince Charles, Tom Cruise and David Bowie all are fans of Lech am Arlberg, an Austrian resort with traditional mountain village looks, 20 minutes’ drive from St Anton. In the heart of the village is the Tannbergerhof, a traditional chalet-style hotel that has been welcoming guests for the past 90 years.
The hotel’s highpoint is its Ice Bar, which hosts daily open-air parties throughout the ski season. The restaurant also has an excellent reputation, offering a 5-course menu, as well as a salad bar for lighter appetites. There’s also a weekly fondue evening in winter and live regional music during the summer months.
Lech is a spot-on choice for committed skiers, offering skiing that is “hard to beat” (The Independent). It’s no less than you’d expect from the birthplace of modern Alpine skiing. The hotel is right across the road from the Rüfikopf ski lift, which transports skiers to the start of the Lech-Zurs circuit, while the Auenfeldjet gondola provides access to Warth. Ski passes also include free shuttle transfers to local villages. Pass numbers are capped each day so the slopes never feel crowded.
In the summer, guests can make use of the free Lech Card, which provides cable car access, entry to local museums and admission to a natural forest swimming pool. Back at the hotel there’s a small wellness area with a sauna, a scented steam bath and a grotto.
The rooms and suites are decorated with splashes of colour and plenty of natural pine. Room sizes go all the way up to 57 square metres for the biggest suites, which offer two bedrooms and a balcony.
