Set in a substantial Victorian building opposite Chester railway station, this 218-room hotel offers a historic place to stay that's within easy reach of the city centre. The hotel was built to cater for first-class rail passengers, and since opening in 1860 has welcomed famous faces including Charles Dickens and Lillie Langtry. The Grade II-listed building retains plenty of period charm, including an impressive 4-storey staircase with an ornate cast-iron balustrade and a statue of Queen Victoria above the porch.
From the hotel it is less than a mile to the historic centre of Chester, with its boutiques, bars and restaurants -- some of which are housed in the distinctive Rows (Chester's unique 2-tier covered walkways). A walking tour of the city walls, which were started by the Romans between 70 and 80AD, offers a unique perspective of the city.
The hotel's King's Grill is a smart 2-AA-Rosette restaurant. Its menu changes with the season, and there's an emphasis on using fresh local produce. Its extensive cocktail menu is said to be the longest in Chester. For something less formal, the Waiting Room bar & lounge serves light bites, sandwiches and gastropub fare.
The hotel, which is licensed for civil ceremonies, has Italian gardens and a courtyard to enjoy, plus there are leisure facilities including a small gym.
Some rooms are situated in the original hotel building, others in a new building that's accessible via a covered walkway. Some have Victorian antique furniture and 4-poster beds. King Emperor Suites on the seventh floor have excellent city views.
