Built in 1812 from stone quarried in the hotel grounds, Merewood Country House Hotel is a traditional property with an enviable location. The hotel is set in woodland that's roamed by red deer and noted for its multi-trunked chestnut tree.
Brockhole on Windermere and the shores of the lake are a 5-minute walk away. You can wander freely through the nature reserve, see the manor house, join a treetop trek and hire bikes and boats (charges apply for activities and parking). Windermere town is a 5-minute drive away and Bowness-on-Windermere is a few minutes further, and is known for its winding streets and cruise boats chugging across the lake.
July 2016 marks 150 years since Beatrix Potter's birth, and there are various events to celebrate. Hill Top -- Potter's former home, where Jemima Puddleduck and Tom Kitten were brought to life -- is hosting evening tours of the house on 1 September and 6 October, and garden tours on 18 September and 16 October. The Beatrix Potter Gallery at Hawkshead is showcasing her original artwork until 22 September, and all these events are within a 20-minute drive of the hotel. The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction is 10 minutes' drive away.
The hotel has ornate wood panelling, original fireplaces and stained-glass windows. There are two AA-Rosette-awarded dining rooms, and some bedrooms have views of the lake. Dogs can stay for an extra £20 per dog, per stay, and are greeted with treats and blankets.
