Hotel La Margherita - Villa Giuseppina is a traditional property, surrounded by chestnut trees on a hillside above the Amalfi Coast. It is on the outskirts of Scala, a quiet village that is "a real little charmer", according to Condé Nast Traveller, with a 12th-century duomo and old palazzi.
The hotel is a 10-minute drive down winding lanes from "ravishing" Ravello, known for its "shady gardens, quiet lanes and sense of faded grandeur" (The Guardian). This mountain town was favoured by Wagner, Virginia Woolf and DH Lawrence, and offers excellent views over the Bay of Salerno. It is home to "truly magnificent" gardens (Lonely Planet) at the Villa Rufolo, which are "packed with exotic colours, artistically crumbling towers and luxurious blooms". The busy coastal town of Amalfi is around 15 minutes' drive away. From here, you can take a boat trip or bus tour to the Grotta dello Smeraldo, an emerald cave filled with stalactites and stalagmites -- Fodor's says the light is best from 12-3pm.
The hotel has an outdoor swimming pool and terrace. The on-site restaurant serves traditional dishes made with local ingredients, and there's also a bar, which offers excellent views across the wooded hillsides and down to the sea. Wi-Fi is available in public areas.
All rooms have a terrace or balcony and air conditioning.
Travelzoo tip: Head to Ravello on Tuesday morning to check out the food, wine and clothes at the lively market in the Piazza Duomo.
