This former coaching inn in the pretty village of Betws-y-Coed makes a great base for exploring the Snowdonia National Park, one of the wildest and most beautiful parts of Britain.
The hotel strikes a good balance between its building’s heritage and more modern touches. Rooms feature mp3 docking stations, flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Upgrade to a Deluxe room for a feature bed -- choose from hand-carved oak, king size sleigh or a four poster. All guests get free access to the Stations Leisure centre, just 5-10 minutes’ walk away.
The Llugwy River restaurant (open Wednesday-Saturday, 6:30-8:45pm) has an AA Rosette and showcases local fare, with dishes such as breast of local wood pigeon and Welsh lamb on the menu. The Grill Bar is more relaxed, with hearty breakfasts and celebrated Welsh cream teas. Listen to live jazz at the Y Stablau bar on Thursday evenings while sipping on real ale.
The principal village of Snowdonia National Park, Betws-y-Coed stand in a region of wild craggy mountains, glacial lakes, thick forests and secret valleys. The Welsh still spoken in the villages here is one of Europe’s oldest living languages. Explore by foot, car or mountain train, and you will come across Neolithic stone circles, Bronze Age chambers, monuments to the great Welsh princes and Roman forts.
