Set in an imposing Victorian building adjacent to Carlisle railway station, the Hallmark Hotel Carlisle is steeped in history. The building was designed by Anthony Salvin, a pupil of British architect John Nash, who was responsible for Buckingham Palace and Brighton's Royal Pavilion. It was built in time for a visit by Queen Victoria in 1853, and there was a special entrance linking the station to the hotel for her arrival. William Gladstone, who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom four times, gave an address from one of the hotel's windows in 1890.
The hotel's central location and proximity to the railway station makes it a good base for anyone wishing to explore the area. It's ideally located for visits to the scenic Yorkshire Dales and Cumbrian Fells on the Settle-Carlisle Railway. The Lanes Shopping Centre, which has more than 70 shops and boutiques, is about a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Carlisle Castle, which is more than 900 years old and is now managed by English Heritage, is just a mile away.
There are plenty of places to eat and drink nearby, and the hotel's brasserie-style restaurant serves modern British cuisine and international classics. There's also a wine bar serving lighter bites.
There are five function rooms at the hotel, three of which, including the grand ballroom, are licensed for civil ceremonies. Guests have access to a local fitness club with a swimming pool and a gym for £10 when a valid Hallmark Hotel Carlisle key card is produced at the club's reception.
The 70 comfortable bedrooms have free Wi-Fi. Most have period features including high ceilings and large windows that allow natural light to flood in. For more space, consider upgrading to an executive bedroom.
