Asilo Masi is a luxurious boutique hotel run by the Countess Cristina Gotti Lega. The restored 18th-century villa was used by the village nuns as a children's nursery ("asilo" means nursery in Italian) before being converted into a hotel in 2013.
The property is surrounded by olive groves and fruit trees, and has an outdoor swimming pool. It is in the small village of Capannoli, which has a couple of local stores and restaurants. Don't miss the Villa Baciocchi, an 18th-century villa that houses an archaeological museum and a small zoo, which is less than five minutes' walk away. The hotel is a 30-minute drive from Pisa and its airport, and an hour's drive from Florence. The Teatro del Silenzio, an open-air amphitheatre in Lajatico (Andrea Bocelli's hometown), is 20 minutes' drive away.
The hotel's restaurant is open to hotel guests only, and serves organic local produces. A buffet spread is laid on for breakfast, and organic eggs are cooked to order. Lunch and dinner are also available, but must be requested in advance. Guests can help themselves to soft drinks, house wine, prosecco and local liqueurs from the bar in the lounge for free, and a selection of fine wines, champagne and international spirits are also available for an extra charge.
There are eight rooms, including two Classic Rooms, two Deluxe Rooms and two Junior Suites. They are all individually decorated with antique furniture and paintings from the countess's collection, and offer air conditioning and free Wi-Fi.
