Cape Town's spectacular scenery, lively melting pot of cultures, fantastic restaurants, affordable shopping, and wealth of tourist attractions and leisure activities make it undeniably, in Charles Dickens's words, "a great inn, on the great highway to the east". With a central location adjacent to the V&A Waterfront and the Two Oceans Aquarium, and views overlooking Table Mountain, the Atlantic Ocean and Robben Island, the 4-star Commodore Hotel is an ideal choice for exploring South Africa's most southerly and exciting city.
The Commodore is a traditional, nautical-themed, six-storey hotel on Portswood Road, about a 4-minute walk from shops, restaurants and attractions at the V&A Waterfront. The Two Oceans Aquarium is an 8-minute walk from the hotel and the South Africa Maritime Museum is five minutes away on foot. Cape Town's iconic centrepiece, the spectacular flat-topped Table Mountain, is an 11-minute drive from the hotel, and easily reached by the red Hop-On, Hop-Off sightseeing bus (costs ZAR180 for a day ticket), which takes in most of the city's attractions and stops at the aquarium. You can also take the ferry from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront to Robben Island, where Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years, for ZAR300.
The hotel's on-site Clipper Restaurant has a terrace with views over the harbour and serves international cuisine; it is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cocktails and soft drinks are available 24/7 in the Admiralty bar/lounge, and there is also a poolside bar. Additional facilities at the hotel include a full-service spa offering massages and other treatments (which can also be taken in the guest rooms), a sauna, an outdoor swimming pool, a well-equipped 24-hour gym and fitness centre, a café, a business centre with a secretarial service and two meeting rooms. An airport shuttle service and valet parking are available on request, for a surcharge.
Each of the classic, climate-controlled rooms and suites includes free Wi-Fi, a 35-inch plasma TV, coffee-/tea-making equipment, a safe, a mini bar, free bottled water, and a complimentary hot and cold buffet breakfast. Some rooms have balconies with views overlooking Table Mountain, the city or the Atlantic Ocean. Larger rooms and suites have additional living-room areas. A 24-hour room service is available.
