The 5-star Grand Tirolia Resort has been making a big impression since it first opened in 2009. Not only was it named the best European ski resort by Forbes in 2012, but it is favoured by celebrities such as Boris Becker and the Klitschko brothers, and the restaurant Petit Tirolia has been recommended by the Gault Millau dining guide for the past five years on the trot.
The setting is stunning, surrounded by the Tirol Alps, and there is a plethora of skiing, hiking, cycling and golfing opportunities on the doorstep to keep guests occupied all year round. Guests benefit from reduced greens fees at the 18-hole Eichenheim course right next door. For skiers, the hotel runs a complimentary Mercedes shuttle service to the Hahnenkamm and Horn lifts (December-March) and there is a ski hire shop on site.
A real highlight is the 1500-square-metre spa, with 13 treatment rooms -- try the Niance anti-aging treatment, using Swiss mountain gold and rock crystal powder -- and a large heated pool that spans both inside and out, with mountain views. There are also four saunas, a salt grotto and two steam rooms, plus regular yoga and pilates classes. Please note that the spa is closed for renovations from 12-19 April.
As well as the award-winning Petit Tirolia restaurant -- where guests can choose between 4-, 8-, or 12-course tasting menus -- there is the Hotelrestaurant Eichenheim, which serves a champagne breakfast in the mornings and a 4-course gourmet menu for dinner. For more relaxed fare, try the Golf Bistro.
The suites are a generous at 88 square metres, and have a separate living room with two flat-screen TVs. Enjoy views of the mountains and golf course from your own balcony (deck chairs are provided), and there is a luxurious bathroom with a separate bathtub, shower and its own satellite TV. Dogs are welcome (charges apply) and each child received a welcome gift, bathrobes and slippers. Wi-Fi is complimentary and the signal is good.
