The JW Marriott El Convento Cusco is a 5-star hotel, built on top of preserved Incan ruins near the Plaza de Armas in the historic part of Cusco. The building incorporates the remains of a 16th-century convent, including its impressive cloister, and the hotel boasts a collection of artefacts from the Killke civilisation, which predated the Incas. Free tours of the hotel and grounds are available daily.
The hotel is five minutes' walk from the Plaza de Armas, which was the heart of the city in Incan times, and the Museo Inka -- if you're interested in the Incas, this is "the best museum in town", says Lonely Planet. The Pre-Columbian Art Museum, the Incan site of Qorikancha and Cusco's main cathedral (built with Incan stones from Sacsaywamán) are also nearby.
The property was updated with a lavish look and opened as a hotel in 2012. The lobby is particularly extravagant and is decorated with 6000 sparkling Swarovski crystals, inspired by the sun god Inti. The hotel's Pirqa Restaurant serves Peruvian and international dishes at breakfast, lunch and dinner, or you can stop by the Qespi Bar for a pisco sour. There's also a lounge bar for light meals. The on-site health club has an indoor pool, a steam room and spa treatment rooms.
Rooms are luxurious, and have views of the historic cloisters or the Incan walls. Bathrooms are marble and have a shower and a separate bathtub. The hotel can pump extra oxygen into the bedrooms to help guests acclimatise to the altitude, and guests are offered local coca tea to help with altitude sickness.
