The 5-star Titanic Gendarmenmarkt opened in 2015, in "a prestigious central location" (The Daily Telegraph) in the upmarket suburb of Mitte. Known today for its lavish décor, fine steak restaurant and expansive spa, the property dates back to the 18th century and was once the German State Opera's costume house.
You'll be staying within walking distance of the Gendarmenmarkt square and the Konzerthaus, where the Konzerthausorchester Berlin performs, Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate. High-end shops on Friedrichstrasse and the Galeries Lafayette department store are also an easy stroll away. For excursions further afield, Französische Strasse and Hausvogteiplatz U-Bahn stations are nearby.
The opulent hotel has been sympathetically restored but oozes elegance and history, with oversized white pillars, marble floors, chandeliers and an expansive lobby. The Beef Grill Club restaurant is well regarded for its steak, and the Schinkel Bar (named after a local architect) serves cocktails and has background live piano music. In the mornings, there's a generous breakfast buffet, with champagne, pastries, fresh honeycomb, omelettes made to order, and a selection of cheeses and meats.
The spa is free for guests to use and is spread across two floors. There's a Turkish hammam, a gym, a sauna, an ice fountain and a number of relaxation rooms, with beauty treatments available on request for a supplement.
Upstairs, there are wooden floors and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout. All rooms come with tablets to use, tea- and coffee-making facilities, rainforest showers and air conditioning. Balconies are available on request and those concerned about street noise would be advised to request a room overlooking the internal courtyard. The standard rooms are a little on the small size, but upgrade to a suite for more space and a Nespresso machine.
