As the Connecticut River pours south from upper New England, it takes one of its sharpest eastward bends along the banks of Middletown, in south-central Connecticut. The streets that bump up against the river were settled more than two centuries ago in this region rich with maritime history. One local baron, the president of a bank, constructed a stately brick mansion on Main Street in 1810 that is today's colonially inspired hotel.

A grand spiral staircase beneath a glowing chandelier greets guests in the lobby, before they head up to spacious rooms with mahogany panelling and period furnishings.

It's only a stroll to reach Wesleyan University, which bustles with student life amid historic halls dating from the 1830s. Staying directly on Main Street, inn guests are only a short stroll from the town's top dining and nightlife, as well as several colonial landmarks that line the street. About two miles away is the bleached Beaux Arts beauty of Wadsworth Mansion, set among manicured lawns and gardens. About six miles away is Saint Clements Castle, a riverside Tudor estate built in the late 1800s and nowadays making cameos in the background of many a wedding portrait.
