The number of accolades Mirror Lake Inn has raked in over the last few years is enviable. It's earned the AAA 4-Diamond award for 30 years, and it has been selected by Travel + Leisure as one of the world’s best hotels four times. The praise continues over at Conde Nast Traveler, where for two years in a row the magazine’s readers selected it as the top resort in the Northeast.
What’s all the fuss about? Let’s start with the location, on the shores of a mirror-calm lake in upstate New York’s beautiful Adirondacks. In the winter, nearby Whiteface Mountain is one of the Northeast’s most popular ski slopes, surely playing a part in getting the 1980 Winter Olympics to come to Lake Placid -- today the sports complex offers skiing, bobsledding and more. In summer, the resort has a private beach, boats and kayaks.
The resort welcomes guests with lobby fireplaces and free afternoon tea and cookies. Many rooms have traditional touches like four-poster beds, chandeliers and beamed ceilings, and all have big windows with lake and mountain views. The upgraded Lookout rooms are 415 square feet -- more space than some apartments -- and have sitting areas that can be closed off from the bed area, as well as wall-to-wall glass that includes French doors opening to fresh mountain air.
The resort sits on seven wooded acres but is only one block from Lake Placid’s Main Street, with wine-tasting rooms, restaurants and outdoor adventure outfitters. The resort also has three restaurants, which "plate the best food in the Adirondacks" (Conde Nast Traveler).
Most facilities remain open year round. Private beach, boats, heated outdoor pool and tennis court are generally open between Memorial Day and Columbus Day, weather dependent.
