The Moat House Hotel is a 17th-century Grade II-listed property in the village of Acton Trusell, near Stafford. It has an "idyllic canal-side setting" -- according to The AA -- and sits on a Norman-period mound which was listed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument for its national archaeological importance.
Cannock Chase, a 6-minute drive away, is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where you can hike the expanse of woodland or explore the remains of Staffordshire's coal mining past. The Ancient High House (the largest timber-framed town house in England), and Weston Park stately home are both within 20 minutes' drive of the hotel. Hoar Cross Hall and Moddershall Oaks spas are both within a 35-minute drive of the hotel, or if you're looking for something a little more adventurous, the hotel is 40 minutes' drive from Drayton Manor Theme Park and 50 minutes from Alton Towers.
Other sights include The World of Wedgewood (30 minutes' drive), Trentham Gardens and its Monkey Forest (30 minutes' drive), and The National Memorial Arboretum and The Royal Air Force Museum Cosford (both 35 minutes' drive). Moorcroft Pottery, which featured in "The Great Pottery Throw Down" TV series, is a 40-minute drive away, and Biddulph Grange Garden and The Peak District National Park are within an hour's drive.
The timber-framed hotel has 41 "stylishly furnished" (The AA) ensuite bedrooms, and a fine-dining Orangery Restaurant, which has two AA Rosettes and offers both à la carte and fixed-price menus. There are also conference rooms and a cosy bar, which has characterful beamed ceilings and a real log fire.
