Quebec City's Old Port neighbourhood is an appealing tangle of cobblestone streets and uneven rooftops, pulled close to the shores of the St Lawrence River. Le Saint-Pierre, Auberge Distinctive hotel fills a 200-year-old building on a narrow lane that was once the city's version of Wall Street. The financial wealth is apparent in the building’s solid masonry, decorative scrollwork and generous proportions.
When the hotel underwent a $500,000 refurbishment in 2013, contractors paid close attention to maintaining the period touches. Original wood floors are covered with simple sisal rugs; the common areas have plush leather furniture and stained glass windows and light fixtures; and the hallways have painted frescoes of the city.
Bedrooms have some examples of these original features, including stone walls and brickwork and oak-framed windows that open (in most rooms). Guests will also find Keurig coffee makers, free Wi-Fi and jetted baths included. Upgrade to a Suite for a separate living area.
Le Quai 19 restaurant serves classic French cuisine throughout the day. There is a library where guests can curl up next to the fireplace and enjoy complimentary coffee. There are also on-site fitness and business centres.
Directly across the street is the Musee de la Civilisation, with a revolving schedule of diverse exhibitions showcasing Haitian artists, modern Inuits, the history of Quebec’s people, and more. A few blocks south is the Place Royale, a particularly well-preserved hive of 1600s inns and churches that once made up what was dubbed "New France" by settlers.
