More Room Types

Ranked as the number five hotel in San Diego on TripAdvisor, the boutique 23-room Pearl Hotel stands out against other top area picks for a number of reasons, the first of which is the price. Located across the bay from downtown on Point Loma, the made-over 1950’s retro-chic hotel caters to the young, hip and budget savvy crowd. While rooms here go for under $150 nearly every day of the year, unlike standard budget spots, The Pearl skimps neither on style, service nor personality.

Its mid-century design is stylish and provides several lively social spaces -- a shaggy-rug game nook in the lobby, an oyster-shaped pool lined by hammocks and a poolside lounge that screens weekly “dive-in movies."

Each room comes with a comfy platform bed, free Wi-Fi and its own fishbowl and beta fish. Rooms in the Gem category are especially compact, though mirrored ceilings give the illusion of a bit more space. Noise from the common spaces drifts easily into rooms, but most guests are too busy participating in the festivities to take notice.

On-site EAT restaurant serves eclectic California cuisine for dinner Monday-Saturday year-round and brunch in spring and summer. The lounge stays open later with a selection of local artisan beers and hand-crafted cocktails. Free loaner bikes are available for exploring Shelter Island, perfect since the hotel is a block from the marina. It’s about a 20-minute drive to downtown and most major attractions deeming a car necessary. Don’t miss a trip to the end of the peninsula to Cabrillo National Monument for gorgeous 360-degree views and in winter, catch a glimpse of Pacific Gray Whales migrating south.
