The Salamander Resort & Spa is under 50 miles from Washington, D.C., but "with its acres of rolling fields and relaxed atmosphere, it feels like it's worlds away" (U.S. News). Offering 168 luxurious rooms on 340 acres of Virginia countryside, the Salamander is one of the South's top 10 Best Resorts (Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice 2014).
Each of the Salamander's rooms features a canopy bed, lofty 10-foot ceilings, a soaking tub and a marble shower; many have working fireplaces as well. Guests can take in views of the Grand Lawn or the rolling acres. Wi-Fi and self-parking are complimentary, and access to the fitness center, sauna and indoor/outdoor pool is also included.
Gourmets and foodies have plenty of options as well. True farm-to-table dining is available Harriman's Virginia Piedmont Grill, with many ingredients sourced from the chef's garden outside the restaurant. The Grill may have the best view in the house, with panoramic views of the countryside, the resort's stables and the Bull Run Mountains in the distance. Virginia wines are on hand at the Gold Cup wine bar, and the resort's Cooking Studio offers classes, demonstrations and private dinners.
Guests can also arrange horseback riding excursions on the same lands that Jackie Kennedy once rode on, or soar through the treetops on a zip-line tour. In nearby Middleburg, guests can visit polo fields and Civil War battlefields, go antiquing or sample vintages at nearby wineries.
It's not a truly relaxing visit to the Salamander without a trip to the 23,000-square-foot spa, "a cocoon of indulgence" (Northern Virginia Magazine). Fourteen treatment rooms are on hand, including rooms with outdoor terraces for sunlit massages along with a couples spa suite. Services include massage, facials, body wraps and salon services. Afterward, relax at the infinity-edge pool, waterfall, steam room and whirlpool.
