The White Hart has a history dating back to the 15th century and is "beautifully restored" (The AA), with traditional features, such as beamed ceilings, a log fire and a charming red-brick exterior.

This coaching inn is the last old inn left in Nettlebed, an ancient staging post, and one of the many quaint wooded Oxfordshire villages with a rich history and plenty of "rustic charm" (Lonely Planet). Renowned travel writer Peter Fleming -- the brother of James Bond creator Ian Fleming -- is buried in the village churchyard with his wife Celia Johnson, who starred in the 1945 film "Brief Encounter".

Henley-on-Thames is a 15-minute drive from the hotel; you can explore the 177-year history of its famous regatta at the River & Rowing Museum. The Aston Martin Heritage Museum (open Monday-Friday 10am-4pm; adults are £5) is 20 minutes' drive from the hotel. Reading is 30 minutes' drive.

The hotel restaurant serves a variety of cuisines, with the South African roots of the hotel management evident in dishes such as grilled boerewors and bobotie -- a mince-bake dish served with saffron rice. The cosy bar and restaurant both have a taste of olde England, with leather wing-backed chairs and traditional décor, but also quirky touches such as bold prints and a wall-mounted shotgun. There is a garden seating area and free Wi-Fi.

Bedrooms are individually designed, with a fusion of modern and antique décor, and some boast roll-top bathtubs. Most of the rooms are in the main building, but some are across the courtyard.
