Located opposite the beautiful Grade II-listed Examination Schools building, and just a stone's throw from Magdalen College, the Mercure Oxford Eastgate Hotel is a perfect base from which to explore Oxford's historic centre. There are numerous bars and eateries in the area, and the River Cherwell and meadows -- think picnics and punting -- are just five minutes away, as is The University of Oxford Botanic Garden. Christ Church, with its magnificent quad and picturesque bell tower designed by Sir Christopher Wren, is just a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

Set in a 17th-centrury building, the Mercure Oxford Eastgate Hotel was once a coaching inn and is steeped in history. Literary greats JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis are famously connected with the hotel, and it is said that an ancient tunnel beneath the building leads to Magdalen College.

Fast forward to the present day and you'll find that the hotel is now home to Marco's New York Italian restaurant. The menu at this eatery by Marco Pierre White features dishes such as antipasto misto, penne New York meatballs, and an Italian burger with mozzarella and crispy prosciutto.

Interiors are influenced by the hotel's surroundings -- artwork depicts local scenes and there are bicycle-inspired design touches. Upgrade to a Privilege Room for more space and extra features including Nespresso coffee machines. Deluxe suites also have king-sized beds and separate lounge areas.

From the press:
  • "This 17th-century coaching inn is redolent with Oxford history: JR Tolkien ate there regularly when he had rooms next-door and CS Lewis proposed to his wife in the restaurant." -- The Daily Telegraph
  • "The restaurant has some fine dining courtesy of Marco Pierre White." -- Daily Mail
  • "If Oxford is on your list of upcoming city breaks, look no further than Mercure’s Eastgate Townhouse Hotel." -- Daily Mail
