"A grand city mansion that persuades you it's a rather lovely country house", is The Daily Telegraph's impression of Jesmond Dene House Hotel. "Don't come here if you want the buzz of the city", the review goes on to say, but do come here if you want a peaceful break within a 10-minute taxi ride of Newcastle city centre.

The hotel is on a bank overlooking the Dene, a wooded valley leading to the Ouseburn river. The building was once home to Sir Andrew Noble, when it hosted Rudyard Kipling and Arthur Conan Doyle, and later became a World War II Civil Defence base and a residential girls’ school. There are still original features throughout -- look out for the inglenook fireplaces, wood panelling and stained-glass windows.

Head chef Michael Penaluna has been praised for his "assured cooking with intriguing combinations" (The Daily Telegraph), and the restaurant here has been awarded three AA Rosettes. The wine list is reasonable and The AA says a visit will be the "highlight of any stay".

There are 32 bedrooms in the original house, and a further eight in a separate annex (the latter have less character but are a little more spacious, and quieter). The rooms in the main house vary in size and overlook the Dene, the car park or the gardens. There will be complimentary fruit, fresh milk, ground coffee, mineral water and magazines waiting for you. Wi-Fi is free and breakfast can be served in your room at no extra cost. The Noble Suite on the top floor has a private hidden roof terrace.

From the press:
  • "It was a view befitting any country house hotel and yet we weren't in the country" -- Financial Times
  • "The staff are superb and always try to go the extra mile" -- Red magazine
  • "It may look like a posh country house hotel but the vibe is friendly and inclusive" -- Olive Magazine
