More Room Types

Set in Oxford’s Castle Quarter, in a converted prison that itself sits within a medieval castle, the Malmaison is certainly one-of-a kind. This hip boutique hotel mixes centuries of history with contemporary style: ‘Be prepared for vertiginous, glass-sided walkways, plenty of leather, black and tartan… and clever allusions to the building’s murky past,’ says The Telegraph.

Oxford’s historic university colleges are minutes away, as is the River Thames (known locally as the Isis) where on a balmy day, you’re likely to see students and visitors punting. The Covered Market is a 6-minute walk, while Westgate Shopping Centre is 4 minutes away. The Ashmolean, Oxford’s museum of art and archaeology, is just 7 minutes’ walk away.

Back at base, the hotel’s trendy brasserie serves classic dishes with a modern twist -- menu highlights include the Malburger, the Black Angus ribeye steak and the French crab tacos. There’s an extensive wine list too, but if you fancy a cocktail or coffee, head to Malbar, which also serves lighter bites and sandwiches (and brunch).

There are 95 rooms, all decorated in contemporary style -- 38 are in the A-wing and were formerly prison cells. These have thick walls and low ceilings and some have views of the prison yard -- rooms in the additional buildings are lighter and airier. The Executive Suite is the pick of the bunch, with a split-level lounge with a balcony and feature windows, plus a cinema room, 4-poster bed, roll-top bath and monsoon shower.
