The Anselmus Hotel, once home to the mineralogist and naturalist Anselmus de Boodt, is in a listed 17th-century building in the heart of Bruges. It is very centrally located, making it a good base for exploring medieval Bruges, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This family-run hotel is just a 5-minute walk from the historic Markt (Market Square), with its open-air restaurants and cafés.

The smaller, but equally photogenic Burg Square, is also a short walk away. Many of the city's cultural attractions, including the Groeningemuseum, which houses an exceptional collection of Flemish Primitives, are within a 10-minute walk or so of the hotel.

A buffet breakfast is served in the hotel's breakfast room, which has a conservatory leading out to a pretty flower-filled garden. Gluten-free options are available on request if you let the hotel know a day in advance. The hotel doesn't have its own restaurant, though there's a good choice of local eateries nearby, and guests can enjoy a drink in the elegant hotel lobby.

Rooms have crisp linen sheets and free Wi-Fi. "Every room is different, and generally spacious", says The Daily Telegraph. For families and groups, there are triple and quadruple rooms, and there is one room which can sleep up to five people.
