The Lygon Arms is one of England's oldest hotels, dating back to at least 1532. Set in the village of Broadway at the foot of the Cotswold Hills, it's a great spot from which to explore the surrounding countryside.
A short stroll away are the Ashmolean Museum, an arm of the renowned museum in Oxford, and the Gordon Russell Museum, which celebrates the Arts and Crafts designer. The village also offers a selection of shops, as well as Broadway Tower, which boasts uninterrupted views of the Cotswold countryside.
Sudeley Castle, Snowshill Manor, Hidcote Manor Garden and the postcard-worthy villages of Chipping Campden, Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold are all less than 20 minutes' drive. There are ample options for day trips nearby, with Stratford-upon-Avon a 30-minute drive away, and Blenheim Palace, Warwick Castle and Prinknash Abbey all around 45 minutes.
The hotel has retained many of its original features, such as wood panelling and flagstone floors, and the grounds feature floodlit tennis courts, archery and a croquet lawn. All guests have free access to the hotel's health club which includes a gym, a spa, a plunge pool, a sauna, a steam room and a heated indoor swimming pool. We've also negotiated a spa treatment with lunch and bubbly for £45.
The fine-dining Great Hall restaurant is set in the hotel's 17th-century hall, with an open fire, barrel-vaulted ceiling and minstrels' gallery. Guests can also dine in Barrington's Brasserie for more relaxed bistro fare.
There is a cosy bar, plus an array of lounges that are perfect for a spot of afternoon tea.
Parking and Wi-Fi are free.
