More Room Types

Set in 6-million acres of wilderness in Adirondack Park, Lake Placid Lodge wraps travellers in a cocoon of timber, stone walls and woollen blankets. A winding approach through pine forests ends on a bluff, where the lodge sits overlooking the 2000-acre lake and Adirondack Mountains. It feels remote, but a 10-minute drive brings you to the shops and cafés in Lake Placid town.

Admire the lake views over farm-fresh dishes from the 7-course tasting menu at Artisans (children aged over 12 are permitted, reservations are recommended), or opt for classic burgers and pork chops at Maggie's Pub. Breakfast is not to be missed -- Travel + Leisure raves about the "as light as the crisp mountain air" buttermilk pancakes.

Rooms are rich with reminders of the surrounding mountains, with timber-clad walls and stone fireplaces in each. There's a soaking tub in every bathroom and beds are custom made from twisted branches and tree trunks, and topped with fur throws. In keeping with the rustic atmosphere, there are no TVs in room, though there is one in the pub. Tucked closer to the shoreline, individual cabins offer enhanced privacy. Here, wide picture windows overlook the lake, and there are a pair of chairs outside for romantic stargazing.

The region is known for its outdoor adventures, particularly in the winter when the lake is used for ice-skating (Ice skates, snowshoes and cross-country skis are free to borrow). Whiteface Mountain is less than an hour's drive away and has the longest vertical ski drop on the east coast. When the snow melts, it reveals hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as opportunities for granite-faced rock climbing, white-water rafting and horseback riding.

There's a 12% per room, per night resort fee, which covers the use of snowshoes, cross-country skis and sleds in the winter, and canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards in the summer. It also covers property-wide Wi-Fi and tours of Lake Placid aboard the resort’s Hacker-Craft mahogany motorboat.

  • "It's a true American treasure -- oozing with so much personality and love" -- Condé Nast Traveler
