The Marquis, in the pretty village of Alkham, is an ideal base for exploring the attractions of Kent, and is also in a convenient location for those travelling to the continent.
The hotel is 15 minutes by car from Dover ferry port and 10 minutes from the Eurotunnel terminal at Folkestone. Nearby attractions include Dover Castle (12 minutes), the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway (15 minutes), Deal Castle (20 minutes) and Canterbury Cathedral (25 minutes).
According to Condé Nast Traveller, "food is the main draw" at the Marquis and the AA has awarded its restaurant two Rosettes. In addition to the à la carte menu, there are also 4- and 7-course tasting menus available. Afternoon tea and lunch are also served, and in the morning, there's a continental buffet with hot dishes cooked to order.
The hotel has 10 individually designed rooms, many with "fantastic views of the Kent Downs" (The AA Hotel Guide), plus two self-catering cottages. All Classic rooms have monsoon showers, underfloor heating and free Wi-Fi. Upgrade to a Deluxe room for a Nespresso coffee machine and a roll-top bath. Baths and showers are in the bedrooms, and there's a separate room for the toilet. Light sleepers should request a room at the back away from the main road.
The cottages are 20 minutes' walk away, next to the hotel's sister business, the Chalksole Estate Vineyard, and sleep up to four and six people. Guests are welcome to take a walk through the vines during their stay (it isn't open to the public) and the vineyard's sparkling wine is available in the restaurant.
