Retreat to the countryside for a night at the Inn at Stratford Hall, on the grounds of "one of the most architecturally distinguished surviving homes built in the colonial period" (Review-Journal). The inn is located on the Stratford Hall Plantation's thousands of acres in Virginia's Northern Neck peninsula, an area dubbed the "Athens of America" in the 18th century.

Rooms are available in two guest houses, the Astor Guest House and the Cheek Guest House. Both houses offer a choice of twin or king beds, and all rooms have private baths. Complimentary Wi-Fi is included, and two large decks allow guests to take in views of the surrounding grounds.

History buffs will love Stratford Hall's Great House, built in the 1730s and home to four generations of Lees, including Civil War general Robert E. Lee. Tours of the house are available daily, and tickets are discounted for guests of the Inn. The surrounding areas also hold plenty of historic interest -- the birthplaces of George Washington, James Madison and James Monroe are all less than a half hour away.

The Inn's grounds need no historical context; the 1,900 forested acres sit along 2 miles of the Potomac River. Guests can explore via hikes, bike or boat. Oenophiles can also launch a trip to any of the nine nearby wineries that make up the Chesapeake Wine Trail.
