More Room Types

More like a miniature fairytale castle than a 19th-century mansion house, the 4-star Mercure Aberdeen Ardoe House sits in 30 acres of tranquil countryside, five miles outside Aberdeen city centre.

There’s plenty to explore in town, with parts of the city centre dating back to medieval times, but any trip to Scotland has to be (at least partly) about castles, whisky, mountains or golf. Around here, though, that’s not a problem. With more castles per acre in Aberdeenshire than anywhere else in the UK, the Aberdeen Castle Trail (taking in 18 of the area’s best sites) is a must-do. The Malt Whisky Trail takes you to many of the Speyside distilleries, approximately 90 minutes’ drive away, while the edge of the Cairngorms National Park offers walking, cycling and golf. You’re also a short drive from the coast and some fantastic beaches.

The hotel has two dining options -- the gourmet Blairs Restaurant and the relaxed Soapie’s Lounge Bar, which serves hearty pub grub. For a pre or post-dinner drink, choose from Laird’s Bar with its extensive selection of whiskies (obviously), or the cosy Drawing Room with wood panelling and an open fire. Hotel facilities also include a spa with an indoor heated pool, a fitness centre and a menu of pampering treatments (charges apply).

The AA praises the “beautifully decorated, thoughtfully equipped bedrooms” -- all 120 rooms offer satellite TV and free WiFi, with interconnecting rooms available for families on request.
