Set in the Thuringian Forest, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Frankfurt, the Berghotel Oberhof is well placed for nature lovers. The area is known for its winter sports, but is popular with hikers and mountain bikers too, and there are a number of trails on the hotel's doorstep.
The ski lifts, toboggan runs and bobsleigh track are just over a mile away, and there is a bus stop on site. The small town centre of Oberhof is a 5-minute walk away, and has a number of local pubs.
The property itself is more than 100 years old and has a traditional air. There is plenty to keep wellness enthusiasts occupied, though, with a range of saunas, experience showers and treatments available -- it's recommended these are booked in advance. A pool house is planned for the end of 2016 and some construction work is taking place. Children will be impressed by the two bowling lanes in the bar, and the homemade ice cream and waffles served on the sun terrace.
The restaurant serves an impressive champagne breakfast buffet, with fresh pancakes and egg dishes (made to order), salmon, juice, coffee, meat, cheese and more. In the evenings, guests may choose their main meal from the à la carte menu, and enjoy a wide choice of starters and desserts from the buffet table.
Wi-Fi is free throughout and the rooms are a good size, although only those in the main house are accessible by a lift. There are tea-making facilities in every corridor.
