The 4-star Gilpin Hotel & Lake House is in Windermere, in the scenic Lake District. Set within 100 acres of landscaped gardens, moors and woodland in a 1901 Georgian-style country house, the family-run hotel has recently added a 6-bedroom mini-hotel known as the Lake House – which includes its own private lake and 4-acre grounds, and a private sanctuary-like spa, The Jetty. The hotel has won numerous awards, including Condé Nast Johansen's Most Excellent Country House Hotel 2013 and the English Tourist Board Awards for Excellence Small Hotel of the Year 2011-2012, and is a member of Relais & Châteaux, with three AA Rosettes for food and four AA Red Stars.
The Gilpin Hotel is ideally located for walking and cycling the Lake District's numerous lakes and fells. Lake Windermere is about two miles away. Close by (about 2.5 miles), there is the popular World of Beatrix Potter attraction, and the Abbot Hall Art Gallery is a little over seven miles from the hotel. But there's plenty of activities and relaxation on hand within the property's grounds, which include 22 acres of mature country gardens and woodland, a llama paddock, and 360-degree views of Cat’s Crag from the Lake House, with a herd of wild deer roaming nearby.
The Gilpin Hotel's 3-AA-Rosette-Awarded restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the main building of the hotel – while there are facilities for breakfast, afternoon tea and picnic lunches in the Lake House, the chauffeur will escort guests staying there to the main hotel for lunch and dinner each day. The hotel’s chefs concentrate on using local produce where possible, providing a selection of freshly prepared à la carte dishes as well as tasting menus, and the hotel's wine cellar has over 200 options from 13 countries. There is also a lounge, bar and terrace for drinks.
All rooms have views of the hotel's gardens, courtyard or moors, and have double, queen (some with 4-posters) or king-size beds, free Wi-Fi, and tea- and coffee-making facilities with homemade biscuits. Lake House guests have six exclusive suites to choose from, each with their own lounge, ensuite bathroom and views. Although the Lake House Jetty Spa is intended primarily for Lake House guests, all guests in the main hotel receive complimentary passes to the Old England Hotel Spa, which has a swimming pool, a sauna and a gym.
