Calm and civilised with touches of glamour" (The Daily Telegraph), Crowne Plaza London - The City is a bright, modern hotel in a prime location near Blackfriars Bridge. It is a great choice for business travellers -- there's free Wi-Fi in public areas and it's just 10 minutes' walk from The City -- but it's also central enough for sightseeing. You'll find the Tate Modern and St Paul's Cathedral within 10 minutes on foot, and the BFI movie theatre, London Eye and the Tower of London just a little farther away. The West End and Chinatown can be reached in three stops on the tube from nearby Blackfriars Station.
There are two main dining options: the AA-Rosette Chinese Cricket Club (Sichuan cooking and dim sum, closed Saturday) and the hotel’s latest venture: Italian restaurant Diciannove (closed Sunday).
Voltaire, a buzzing bar and eatery, is a trendy option for champagne and light bites. Reserve a VIP table in one of the cellar alcoves -- these darkly glamorous stone vaults were once a dungeon when the building was one of Henry VIII's royal palaces. The comprehensive list of on-site facilities also includes a small gym and a sauna, and the hotel is also ideally situated for riverside runs, as it's set one block from the River Thames.
Renovated in 2011, rooms are stylish and are double glazed. Standard rooms aren't huge, but they are no smaller than is the norm in London. Upgrade to a King Studio for more space and a separate sitting area. Guests staying in rooms on the Club level also get free access to the Club Lounge, which provides breakfast, hors d'oeuvres and drinks as well as free chocolate in the mini bar. Families can be accommodated in some rooms, and those up to the age of 18 stay free.
From the press:
"Don't let the hotel's all-business appearance and financial-district location put you off—it's a polished operation, with stylish minimalist rooms and a Michelin-starred restaurant, and it's just steps from a Tube station" -- Fodor
"The lobby has a soaring atrium and modish interiors that are a welcome surprise, and the mood is calm and civilised with touches of glamour. Expect to see a lot of suits" -- The Daily Telegraph
