Handsome and historic, The Citizen Hotel is set in a cleverly restored 1920's building in downtown Sacramento. It attracts visiting politicians and local big wigs -- perhaps for its political film library (look out for some classic titles from former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger) or maybe for its swanky, intimate ambiance.
The hotel overlooks Cesar Chavez Plaza Park, which occupies a historical district studded with landmarks such as the State Capitol Building and Capitol Park. A few blocks away you'll find Midtown, where most of the city's galleries, restaurants and wine bars are situated. Also nearby are the Crocker Art Museum and the Sacramento River.
The upscale restaurant, Grange, is popular with food critics for its farm-fresh Californian fare, featuring local specialties such as Orland suckling pig and Passmore Ranch trout. Zagat describes it as “locavore heaven". Don't miss the regular happy hour (Monday-Friday, 3-6pm). The hotel does have a fitness centre, but most guests prefer to run along the river instead -- the 32-mile-long trail is less than 10 blocks from the hotel.
Rooms are on the small side, but are well dressed with traditional striped wallpaper, velvet armchairs and Italian linens. Upgrade to the historic 13th floor for impressive tile work in the bathrooms and deep bath tubs (suites only). Whatever the design and layout, all rooms have Mac mini computers with giant flat screens instead of TVs, allowing guests to stream Netflix movies, check emails, and even order room service.
