"Blessed with a quiet, rural atmosphere, a mild climate and a long shoreline of pretty beaches", the Isle of Wight is a popular island for holidays, says Condé Nast Johansens. Explore its treasures from the Villa Rothsay Hotel, which sits on a hill above the seaside town of Cowes. The family-run property dates back to 1873 and, in the days when it was still a family residence, hosted King Edward VII. Now a boutique hotel, it remains a real home-from-home and has a quaint atmosphere that matches its Victorian background.

Cowes is home of the largest sailing regatta in the world, held annually in August, and hotel guests can enjoy excellent views across the Solent from the garden terrace. The property is a 20-minute walk from the centre of town, where you'll find shops, a pebble beach and West Cowes ferry, and neighbours the 18-hole Cowes golf course. Osbourne House, Queen Victoria's summer home, is just across the River Medina in East Cowes, which is a 25-minute drive or an hour's walk from the hotel.

The hotel's library makes a charming resident's lounge, filled with antiques, yachting memorabilia and the day’s newspapers. There's an honesty bar and a log fire burns here in the winter. The hotel's carvery restaurant serves up generous portions of classic dishes and, for afters, there’s a menu of traditional dessertd. The restaurant is closed on Sunday evenings and advance booking is required. Breakfast is made with local ingredients and there is a full-English option.

It is an intimate place with only 13 rooms, each equipped with free Wi-Fi and individually decorated in Victorian style. All are large and airy, and some have balconies with sea views.
